Chapter 5

I found this chapter very intersting. The different education movements and how they helped change things, “bringing about a curriculum that honor histories, literatures, and linguistic traditions of a diverse student population. The different classroom work being very important… language and identity, investigate issues of difference, promote critical consciousness, a virtual connection between rhetorical study and service. The whole part of the chapter on ebonics was very interesting, I really liked and agreed with the part about language teachers needing to know the history of english language as well as the changes in vocabulary and syntax and pronunciation. Ebonics movement, actually being about dymystifing the standard english by emphasizing the nature of linguistic conventions, to make students feel freer to move between the languages of a wide variety of communities.

chapter4

I do not like this, I wrote this once, and somehow lost it all, go figure. So here goes, if I lose this one too I give up for the night. Chapter four was very interesting to me. I grew up in the south, and learned a lot about the civil rights movment, we learned about it  every year, pretty much the same thing every year. Almost always around this time of year as well.  This was very different from what I learned as a kid. It was from a rhetoric standpoint rather a history stand point. Also, books cant glare at you like it was your fault, I had some fun interesting teachers. I had no idea about many things mentioned, for example the bombings, the fact that there were 2 groups the agitators were dealing with. I had never thought that the political and the business would be different. Also I had never really learned about the people on the establishment side. I only learned about the protestors, the civil rights activists. Learning about the different people involved, especially Conner, was very intersting and a little disturbing. The fact that he had so many ties to other organizations, bothered me, the KKK and the White Citizens’ Council and people at the FBI. I had never even heard of the Whtie Citizens’ council until now. THe way the agitators tired to follow the steps mentioned in previous chapter of this book was very interesting. Also the way that the political establishment, or at least Conner, walked into giving the agitator more support was very interesting. Overall, I enjoyed learning about it in this light rather than the way I learned it in grade school, I think it might actually be helpful now other than don’t relive the past kind of thing. The strategies used are very helpful with other causes.

chapter 3

I found this section very interesting, and helpful. It helps to know what the enemys plans are. I cant believe how much they can get away with, legally and even just with  the agitatiors. The fact that they do so many things to try to make them give up. Instead of just listening and trying to compromise they try things that might work for them or might make things much worse, which to me seems really stupid.

There are a lot of definitions and examples in this chapter, I find that very helpful, it shows you what it means rather than just telling you, also by looking at our history we learn from it. There are many different protests that I have never heard of or some that I havent heard that much about that I can see the outcome to.

I pretty much underlined the whole chapter. And if I participate in a protest, I will know how they will try to fight back and either make it impossible to fight back or be able to counteract them right away.

Post to pgs 21-51 of RAC

I enjoyed reading this, although I enjoyed the first portion better. I found the first part more interesting, and focused more on what I was reading.

The strategies  and tactics seemed interesting. I didn’t realize quite how many there were, or what they would be called, I knew the idea but not the terms. I had just heard something on the radio Miss America Pageants this weekend and then I read about a protest on page 24.

All of the protests on the War are very interesting, new takes on old ways of protesting, namegrams, die-ins. Trying to get peoples attention. Also climbing a building with a banner commenting on 9.11

The quote from Abbie  Hoffman was also interesting on page 27.  I love the first sentence, more tvs than toilets, completely true. Tv can help communication but can also harm it. Everything we hear and watch is controled by someone else. we control what channel but not what is on the channel. But if someone does make the news and they air it the public sees it and promotes their cause.
